English phonetics (15/11)

We started the second part of the course "Lingüística para la Enseñanza de la Lengua Extranjera" (Linguistics for the Teaching of a Foreign Language) which is about English Phonetics. Here I will post all the materials developed in class. 

Objectives:
  • Develop a passive knowledge of the sound structure of English.
  • To develop phonetic skills aiming at acquiring an acceptable, relatively native-like sounding English.
  • To gain practice in phonological transcription, ear training and oral production.

  • Listen to authentic English (radio stations, TV, music, etc.).
  • Use of dictionaries, either on-line or off-line.
  • Use of word processors together with sound.
  •  Make of use of your own recordings. 
  • Build your own multimedia library. 
What is Phonetics?
  • Phonetics is the study of speech: how speech is produced and how it is perceived.
  • It differs from phonology.
  • The subject matter of phonology.
